Miss Nibs story
Miss Nibs story is a classic one summarized, family moving, getting divorced, cant take her, she is unwanted and so are her unborn. Although they have a un neutered 13 yr old male they claim too old to be fertile and so the story goes. My husband took her in even though we where at our limit at the time once the woman stated they would take her and slip her into the fence at a local dog pound if they could not locate someone to take her. He knew I would figure out something to help this girl when I got back home. Simply put Ohio or any pound is no place for a dog especially a pregnant one. He knows this and is a compassionate steward for the animals. We can't help them all, but we will keep trying to help those we can.
When I first seen her I was horrified to say the least. I have NEVER seen a dog this big, this was pregnancy genocide!
When I first seen her I was horrified to say the least. I have NEVER seen a dog this big, this was pregnancy genocide!
She was taken to the vet immediately ( 5-29-2010 ) to have a full evaluation, blood work, HW test, worming and x-ray to determine the development of the puppies relevant to size, we needed to know if she would be able to give birth, also an idea of how many to expect to make sure she passed all of them. I was not able to get in contact with the former owner for information we needed. Test results showed she was about due and looked to expect about 7- 8 maybe more because it was not as clear as Dr. Valerie would have liked due to the fecal matter and food she had in her belly. But at least we learned there would be eight pups to watch for and that they where a size that she could pass easily when the time came. Do you see the puppies in her ribs? The x-ray stopped at the 5th rib, more could have been even higher, they would be crushing against all her organs!
She was placed on puppy food 6 times a day ( small meals because there was no where to put it ) and vitamins for extra nutritional care because she looked nutritionally deprived by not only her former owner care but also the pups she carried fighting for food inside of her enormous belly. Every day was a effort as well as hope that today would be the day she would be delivering and comfortable. Saturday came and still no puppies, then late evening when she was brought from our kitchen where her Condo was placed, there she was starting labor. We took her to potty and she ran back into her condo (puppy crate) where my husband placed her a nice wooden box he built as a whelping box. There she waited, and we waited.......nothing was happening but these things take time.

Sunday afternoon we decided to take her in to The Emergency Clinic to see what was happening. We could feel the pups moving but this labor was not progressing, it seemed to stop. Because she never really pushed we assumed she was in false labor. These places are extremely expensive but when your Vet is unavailable its the next best place to go. Anyway, the Vet there took x-rays to see if there was a puppy blocking the birth. All was clear and so she gave Miss Nibs a shot to get her labor going. With in minuets I heard a faint squeak from the other side of the door. Miss Nibs had a Girl!!!
The Vet at The Animal Emergency Clinic told us that everything would be ok, her labor would continue they felt with no problems. If she strained or did not have another with in 6 hours to call our vet or bring her back. Miss Nibs was discharged and baby daughter where discharged. About 5:30 P.M. So we came back home, Miss Nibs all proud between my husband and I in her basket with my hand patting her head and offering calming support. She loves being spoken too and looks at you with Hush puppy eyes. This is a little girl one could easily attach too. It behooves me even after hearing all the excuses from folks as to why they abandon their companions. In her case.....I am so glad they did! Well my daughters, husband and I took turns sitting in the kitchen reading as we waited for the rest to arrive. About 7:02 she delivered a angel. I felt so bad for her, but these things happen. I allowed her to clean it and love it up a short time before I took its little lifeless body out while my husband took her for a quick potty. By 9:00 PM I was getting worried, and then finally at 10:39 PM we had a live PUPPY! Miss Nibs did very well with tending to it and then rested. I bit off all my nails while reading ( don't know if it was from reading a boring book or not while I waited) and sent my husband to pick up a pack of gum, I knew it would be a long night. About 4:15 she had her third baby and all was well. By 7:00 her labor was almost stopped again. It was the craziest labor I ever experienced but we followed all the instructions of the Vets with her. I rubbed her belly and messaged it while the puppies nursed. Still nothing. I had decided that since Dr. Valerie would be in office in a couple hours I would take her in for another exam when she opened. This was going too slow from my experience. Miss Nibs was doing well, licking her puppies and resting.
Visit with Dr. Valerie Olszak D.V.M.
We called and rushed Miss Nibs right in to be examined and see if she needed another shot to get the puppies birthed. I was worried for this little girl. Dr. Valerie examined her and found a puppy in the birth canal that she suspected was passed away. She gave Miss Nibs a shot to start labor on and tried to remove the puppy. Unfortunately this puppy had died in utero and was all pieces it had been dead and decaying in utero for some time. She told us that she was going to give her another shot to try and see if it would clear since she had retrieved some of it, removing some of the blockage she also had very bad infection and she felt Miss Nibs was turning toxic and felt that a c-section / spay was warranted if she could not get the puppies to be delivered. So I came back home to post on Miss Nibs behalf to begin her fund raiser because Dr. Valerie was voicing strongly that Nibs was in serious shape. We are about 8 minutes from the office, and go right back to be with Nibs before she has the emergency c-section / spay, so she knew everything was ok as supportive services for this little mama. While home for the 1/2 hour to write the post for a fund raiser for her emergency care.....this darling baby gave up her fight and went grave and Dr. Valerie feared loosing her so she went ahead and preformed the emergency C-section and fought to save Miss Nibs! She was sickened by what she found.
Her uterus was HUGE, the largest she has ever seen. She has been a Vet about 25 to 30 years and advocates spay neuters doing countless numbers of them. The uterus was horrible and rupturing, it had a large bulging area ready to blow at any moment, there was no more stretch and it was totally toxic...there was pus and goo all over and was like a water logged old sponge, I was told the odor from the toxic infection in her belly was putrid. This baby girl was in pain and kept it to herself. Who knows where her will power came from. Anyway, These puppies where weakened by the poison from this poor girls uterus full with little lives. Unfortunately with the anesthetic and all the intervention that could be done. These babies did not make it. While the vet techs tried to get these babies going, Dr. Valerie Olszak D.V.M. worked feverishly to save Miss Nibs. After removing a grossly sick uterus, she washed her very large empty belly with antibiotic wash and coated her inside with antibiotics due to all the infection she found before closing her up with dissolving stitches and staples. Miss Nibs had an antibiotic IV plugged in and shots as well, the infection had to be brought into control vigorously if this girl was going to survive. She also said that she has NO fat tissue at all. she was badly drained and had lacked proper care. By time I arrived, it was over. Dr. Valerie allowed me to go back and see her for a minute. While there she was awake and all cozy in her basket and then they gave her back her puppies. That's when we took these photos. I am not sure who their gave her the little duck, but that act of kindness was awesome and was my balm.

Coming home
We went back and picked her up at Dr. Valeries about 5:00 P.M. needless to say I was really not prepared for her. I knew she would be thin but not a Humane Poster Child......She was a bit over 14 pounds, but now she was 7 pounds lighter. Her body is sickly thin and hollow. It will take some time but she will recover and put on some weight. With nursing her babies it will take a little bit extra but I can't wait to see what she looks like after she is healed and healthy. She has such a wonderful personality. My husband scooped her up so lovingly and carried her to the truck after Dr. Valerie and I walked her for a potty before leaving the clinic. Once in the truck she was united with her babies.
Thank you
We will keep updating this beautiful fighting mommy. She would never have lived threw this ordeal without Dr. Valerie D.V.M. and all of her fantastic staff at the Grand Valley Veterinary Hospital. Those who have contributed donations to help cover her emergency medical care cost and those who wish to contribute to cover the remaining costs or those future visits she will still have to insure her health as she heals, We hope that God pours his blessing on you and yours. We can't begin to express out gratitude and thankfulness that you wish to touch the life of a rescue animal in need. You are amazing and I hope to meet you along life's journey someday and shake your hand or give you a hug.

Update: 6-10-2010
Wanted to give you an update. Miss Nibs and I spent about 2 1/2 hours with Dr Valerie D.V.M. yesterday trying to devise a way to allow Miss Nibs to nurse the puppies with out the e-collar which is driving her mad. We hold the puppies for her to clean, but she must wait for us and not tend to them as nature mandates. Currently its every hour on the hour. We where going to put her in a onsie, but little ones can't nurse. So we left her with her e-collar and I would sit on the floor with her between my legs so she could nurse her babies and tend to them, its extra work but it allows her to care for the pups properly and so I can make sure she does not do anything wrong like lick her incision. Once she is done, I put her e-collar back on, place her 3 babies in the whelping box and her with them. That's how we work it. I do express her for that first milk for her little girl who is not doing so good. I started tube feeding her today. We hope we can pull her threw. These puppies are so small one could curl and sleep on a table spoon! Well about 10:30 last night ( Wednesday ) My husband checked on her and the sleeping brood. At first he though she was cleaning the puppies until he noticed a staple.......then it was OMG spoken in a whisper and grew into his normal voice, "Tonya, She took her staples out!" Somehow she bent the e-collar enough to get her head around to her belly. He took her out of her condo to see if she could wait till morning to go to the vets.......OH no......Miss Nibs did a quick job of it.......all but 4 of 24 staples where out! Out came the medical box, we put a large sterile square bandage over the gaping opening that we pulled together and wrapped an ace bandage to hold, apply pressure and hold her together. Slipped on my shoes and my husband, I and Miss Nibs went to a ride to the 24 hour emergency clinic in Youngstown because it was closer. The DVM there took her and had to put her under, look to see if any staples fell inside, cleaned and sterilized the area, then proceeded to close her back up. This trip was at a cost of $390.00!! Once she woke up we where able to bring her back home. She is not allowed to nurse the pups until morning, she is in a body wrap and a stocking plus her e-collar......we now know not to trust her with a e-collar. She will be a trial I am sure. Since Saturday her Vet expenses to save her life is over $1200.00. I will have to start tube feeding all the babies for a day or two until the wrap can come off. They will receive 1cc ever three hours to begin and as they need more we will increase it. If we have to continue to feed them, I will wean them onto a preemie bottle when they are big enough to get the nipple in their mouth, So this is where we are now with Miss Nibs, who I might add looking pretty darn guilty causing so much Drama. Currently she is looking as me, smacking her tail like she is so happy to see me....I fed the puppies when we got back and Miss Nibs cleaned them. Its 4:58 A.M. and You will be getting up when I am just going in for a 2 hour power nap......LOL who we kidding, there is no sleeping here. I fixed the Pay pal link in case someone wished to use that in Lieu of Credit, debit cards or checks., But it really is best to call the Vet, it makes it quicker to get the assistance coverage to save those who need saving, But should you wish to use the pay pal, the link there now is corrected

Update 6-11-10
Two more babies entered Rainbow Bridge. Its sad when despite your best efforts these bright lights leave our care to become angels. It is rare here to see death knock and hurts so to see one taken. The last little fighter is doing ok so far, I am going to call him Gabriel, He is so tiny and looks dwarfed in my hands. He is being given 1cc of rich goat milk every 2 hours to supplement to make sure he is getting enough. Its as close to his mothers milk as we can get. We allowed Miss Nibs to care for him but she has little milk yet because she is so down herself. Which brings us to her newest drama...............
Miss Nibs during in the night hours got once again to her staples! This time she got 5 out, she could not reach the rest thank God. I noticed this when I took her from her condo to potty and put Gabe on. I sit on the floor with her between my legs with my hand protecting her belly area so she will not lick her staples because I take her E-collar off so she can stimulate him to potty and all that goes with motherly licking to tend to her son with out mashing him with the edges. (it is put back on after she is done bathing him) Gabriel likes the first teets under her front legs, so that makes it easier. I felt something warm this time and wet and when I rolled her over to looked at her incision I was disgusted, because once again she was open.....not full throttle open like the other night but about 7 staples pulled. We thought by adding a extra hole in her collar so it was tighter she would not be able to manipulate her nose past her e-collar and get to her staples, I even would put a onsie on her when I left the room and we could not keep checking on her while away doing other chores for a short while. I could not put a cast type cover on her belly because we want Gabe to try and nurse as much as possible in between the supplemental tube feedings. As she starts to develop milk and he gets stronger we hope to stop the supplemental feeds. Yet once again she figured how to get to those staples. Short of a muzzle to completely cover her mouth we are perplexed how to keep this girl away from her staples. I had not replenished my emergency supply box that we used two nights before when she did this so I had to improvise. There was just a few more hours before Dr. Valerie would be open, My husband and I took and wrapped her in Viva paper towels like a belly cast, applied Gorilla tape to hold it. Put back on a onsie and wrapped her in an ace bandage. Let me tell you, she was a sight to behold. She was trussed up real good, she could pretty good but at least there was not going to be one more staple missing before she seen Dr. Valerie. Poor little Gabe was now going to be totally supplemented. I unwrapped Miss Nibs about 8 for her potty but left the paper towel bandage covering secured with Gorilla tape ( LOL ) and kept her on my lap until I could get a hold of Dr. Valerie who was as disgusted with our Drama Queen. They chuckled at my huge makeshift bandage I swaddled her in, but it did the job of keeping her away from it and keep clean the best it could be. Dr. Valerie I think, is going to devise a body suit maybe like a soft cast for her to stay in 24 / 7, so Gabriel will be fed every two hours around the clock by tube feedings and still get some mommy time for other important nurturing. Its a shame that she just will not leave it alone, but anyone who knows a Dachshund breed....if they want something bad enough they will find a means until they. Their tenacity is one of their biggest personality assets. Although she is extremely sweet she is truly stubborn. So at this time moment, our Miss Nibs is once again at Dr. Valeries. I dropped her off this morning. I am sure she will be trussed up like a Christmas Goose really fine now but with out the feathers.
Hopefully Miss Nibs will realize soon that we are trying to save her life and to stop her refusal to mess with her incision. I know she is confused.....she had not had time to adjust to her new environment from being surrendered, new smells, sounds, people... over breed pregnancy ready to give birth any time, medical emergencies, operation, puppies, and several more rids in the car to replace staples etc all in a few days.....poor thing is going threw hell. Cant imagine what goes threw her mind, but when she looks up at me with those sad almost giving up eyes, I make a promise to her that when all this is behind her and Dr. Valerie says she is ready and can be adopted by to a dedicated family, I will find her the most prized family that any dog could ever hope for who will love her for the rest of her life. She will be the queen of her the castle and be cherished by those in her kingdom!
After this lesson, my emergency first aid box will be modified to have huge bandages and breathable doggy body suits!.
Well its time to go pick up Miss Nibs and bring her home from getting her tummy repaired once again.

Healing time 6-13-2010
Miss Nibs is sleeping a lot but recovering. She still has small meals ( 6 a day ) as she slowly regains her weight that she should be, heal from sever toxic infections and rebuilds her health. She will visit her Vet later next week to have her staples removed and complete her medical care so that she will soon be able to be adopted into a dedicated and loving forever family that she so deserves.
All of Miss Nibs babies are playing at Rainbow Bridge chasing butterflies and each others tails in the warm sweet sunshine as they frolic in the lunch green meadow.

Its a horrible time for Miss Nibs
Miss Nibs was doing well healing and then on Friday June 18th she had a horrible and unexpected set back that almost cost her her life. You see from the toxic poisoning her uterus was still sick. Although she was spayed, when they have a spay there is a small amount on whats called a stump ( in a human it would be the cervics ). Well it started to bleed, and with in a few minuets she had started to hemorrhage. Most Vets never see this although its taught in College text books. Dr. Valerie frantically with the aid of her staff managed to stop Miss Nibs from bleeding to death. She stayed in the hospital for 4 days and finally came back and is currently still under tight watch and also being crated to keep her still. She is on antibiotics and will continue them for quite some time. We have to watch her for signs of pyrometria in that case Miss Nibs will once again have to have another operation. She will go weekly for a while to monitor her blood count due to the horrific blood loss. This will be done by taking a little of her blood and looking at it under scope and other tests to make sure she is re-building her blood loss. If she does not, she will also have to go to another hospital and receive a blood transfusion. WE pray none of these will need to happen and that she is now on her way to recovery so in time she will be allowed to be adopted into a home with a family who will cherish her forever.
Update 7-4-2010
Miss Nibs is still holding, she had her blood test and it showed that her red blood cells where up just a very small amount, but at least they went up. Her white count is holding steady so there currently is no infection present from the toxic poisoning she suffered. Miss Nibs is still on antibiotics for a long while as she heals. No bleeding ( Thank The Good Lord ) and although she is eating a little better, it would be nice if she ate just a fraction more per feeding. She has gained a little weight and her facial expressions tells us she is feeling a little better. Miss Nibs is still being crate rested and not allowed to play yet. She will continue to go visit Dr. Valerie Olszak D.V.M. weekly for blood draws for about a month to six weeks. I hope she will not need a blood transfusion, as long as she improves even though small maybe she will not.
The last three days, she has been going out on leash to enjoy a little sun and not just a quick potty. She has been getting doted on by a 4 year old who thinks she is the cats meow. In her child like understanding she told me in a conversation " That all her puppies went to Heaven to be with God and Miss Nibs missed them and feels better when she has a little girl around." So Miss Nibs has quite a bit of time with a little friend and is not lonely. I took this photo while she and my granddaughter sat outside with me soaking up some sunshine as we sat on the ground watching a few hay wagons go by.

Miss Nibs loves a feather light rub on her tummy, when she wants one, she will roll over next to you and offer her belly. Maybe she learned to enjoy it when she first came. I felt so horrible for her that I carried her everywhere and constantly rubbed her belly as I spoke gentle words to her. She soaks it up. Believe it or not, she likes to be read too. I think its just the voice that comforts her. She soaks up the warmth and love.
She looks so much better even though she has a ways to go. Miss Nibs has a itch to run and explore. Someday soon I tell her. Then we will begin to look for a awesome family that will be hers alone.
Update: 7-24-2010
Miss Nibs has come a long way. She still is being watched for a possible blood transfusion, but her blood work shows steady blood building except that its not building up fast. She is feeling very well and with the high heat we do not let her play except in the evening or early morning house. Although she lost her pups, she seems to have adopted Zooey. He is another companion in need here at The Weiner Brigade Inc. Where one is the other is very close if not beside the other. Just looking at the photos below let you know that these animals appreciate the chance of being alive and trying to live to the fullest. Miss Nibs has taught us a lot since coming to us so critical and she was worth every heart ache. She will have a family and a new story to tell very soon.
